Rejuvenating myself with Fillers and Botox

Now that I’m in my late 30’s, I know that age is catching up on me. I notice things like crows feet, fine lines, hollow under eyes as well as a general feeling that collagen has left the house. It’s time for rejuvenation – I want to look like me, refreshed.

I smiled super hard as I took the photo to the right, so that you can see my lines and crow’s feet.

Picking my aesthetic doctor

I went to see Dr. Terence Tan at Halley Medical Aesthetics because while any certified doctor can perform the same treatments I need, it is very important to pick an aesthetic doctor with taste that you like.

I have known Dr. Terence Tan of Halley Medical Aesthetics for a long time and, having seen very good results from CoolSculpting at Halley Body Sliming Clinic, and having seen him fix areas I clearly missed out on myself, I naturally have trust in his taste.

Treatment plan and understanding fillers

After listening to my concerns, requirements and examining my face, Dr. Terence Tan recommended Botox and the Juvéderm brand of Dermal Fillers, which are made from Hyaluronic Acid (HA), a natural compound found in the body that helps to hydrate and moisturise our skin. It also keeps our skin plump and glowing.

He explained that the difference between the different types of dermal fillers lies in how densely their molecular weights are cross-linked together:

  • The softest, most spreadable dermal filler is suitable to fill in under eyes without looking overdone
  • A slightly denser dermal filler can fill out hollows
  • A firm dermal filler can be used to balance out facial structure

At the end of my consultation, Dr. Terence Tan prescribed a combination of fillers and Botox to create a natural yet effective lift to my face:

  • Botox for treating my crow’s feet and for giving me a slight brow lift
  • Juvederm Volbella (softest, most spreadable filler) under my eyes
  • Juvederm Volift (medium density filler) at my cheek area to lift sagginess
  • Juvederm Volift at my marionette lines
  • Juvederm Volux, (firm filler) at my chin, to balance out my face shape because I have an under developed chin

Treatment process

I feel comfortable during the application of my fillers and Botox because Dr. Terence Tan was diligent in letting me know what he was doing at the moment. I was also often given a mirror to check and see if all is going to my liking.

Dr. Terence Tan injected the fillers using the “Magic Needle” ( actually, a micro-cannula) because it distributes the filler more evenly and enables him to apply the filler with minimal pain and no bruising. I was apprehensive at first because it looked blunt and I imagined it to be painful but, I can now confirm that  discomfort level was very low.

Juvederm fillers contain lidocaine, an anesthesia, which probably helped a lot, but the discomfort level of my entire treatment was so manageable, I received the fillers without any numbing cream, relying only on the application of an ice pack to numb the injection area.

Treatment took only a short time because Dr. Tan was swift and decisive. In no time, I have the refreshed look I wanted and a more balanced face from the chin filler.

Before and after

Right after my treatment, Dr. Terence Tan and I sat down to look at the differences with my before and after photos excitedly.

These pictures were taken just before the treatment and right after the treatment, on the same day.

The dark circles are from sleeping only 4 hours the day before but the lift to my under eyes is immediately noticeable and extremely obvious. What pleased me a lot, which might not be very apparent in the photos, is how much more balanced my face looked.

I felt soreness in the first few days and my chin was bruised and swollen at the underside, such that it looked imbalanced. Dr. Terence Tan made time to see me for a short consultation, to assure me that the bruising and swelling will go away in around a week’s time, and that injectables such as fillers need time to settle. In his own words “I could perhaps have spoken to you over the phone, but I think you will feel better if I see you and gave you that assurance in person”. Yes, it really did put me at ease!

These pictures were taken in the days after my treatment, where you can see the effects of Botox setting in as well. The swelling also went away and the chin looks more balanced.

No more crows feet when I laugh heartily, the lines under my eyes are diminished but not so smoothed out that I look unreal. Overall, I look fresh and my face is better balanced. I’m super happy with the results of course!
