Kitchen | The condiment drawer

Planning my kitchen was the most stressful part of the entire home renovation project, because everything is customised. I had already been cooking for a while and I knew what I wanted in my kitchen. So I could not accept carpentry that is simply divided according to space available.

There are a number of things I customised and one of them is the condiment drawer.

WHY I KEEP MY CONDIMENTS IN A DRAWER

My backsplash is made of glass

I choose glass for ease of cleaning but I can’t drill holes as I please unless it was pre-planned before the glass is set.

Condiments leak once in a while

Accidents happen and since I know there will come a day when I’ll be too tired / not observant enough to notice leaks that could stain my countertop, I just avoid it altogether.

Dust accumulates quicker than I would like to clean

Anything you leave out in the open will accumulate glass unless, you wipe every bottle every day. Which, to me, leads to the chance that something undesirable may be added to my food, together with the seasoning.

HOW TO CUSTOMISE YOUR OWN CONDIMENT DRAWER

I took my measuring tape to the supermarket and measured the tallest condiment I will use.

After that, I told my carpenter two things:

1. I need the internal space to be able to accommodate that height / width comfortably.

2. The condiment drawer has to be on my right, because I am right handed.

MY THOUGHTS AFTER USING THE CONDIMENT DRAWER FOR CLOSE TO 3 YEARS

Its very convenient for me to keep the overall kitchen environment clean. There is no need to move items here and there for cleaning, because my countertop is uncluttered.

When I’m cooking something that smokes up the kitchen or makes it oily, there is no need to worry about tacky condiment bottles because I can just close the condiment drawer after I’m done.

I have a bird’s eye view of all the condiments because I arrange the labels facing my standing direction when I cook, rather than facing front. So there is no need to fumble to look for the right one, and no need to shift other condiments to get to any.

The only thing is opening the drawer when my hands are soiled. But I do anyway and wipe it right away after I’m done with cooking because, if theres anything I learnt about housework at all, it is that you have to try to do things right away whenever possible, or it’ll not get done because I’ve forgotten about it.

All in all, I’m really happy with this arrangement and, also happy that it was this simple to customize.

Try it!
